Aboriginal Communities

ATCO Electric values its relationships with our Aboriginal communities.

We build relationships that benefit those communities and ATCO Electric alike. One of the ways we do this is by providing business and employment opportunities to Aboriginal communities within our service area.

We also consult with First Nations and Métis settlements in our service area on:

  • construction and maintenance activities (including plant remediation)

  • construction of new transmission lines maintenance projects

  • right-of-way maintenance

In addition to working closely with Aboriginal communities, groups and contractors, ATCO Electric established new awards  for students of Aboriginal ancestry enrolled at

  • Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT),

  • Grande Prairie Regional College

  • Keyano College

ATCO Electric also worked with Northern Lakes College in Slave Lake to develop a trade preparation program and continues to support NorQuest College's Ben Calf Robe program. Under the guidance of a Cree elder, students of Ben Calf Robe program can learn about the values and beliefs, culture and heritage of Aboriginal Albertans today.

As well, ATCO Electric established an Aboriginal Summer Student Program that aims to provide qualified Aboriginal post-secondary students with meaningful work experience.
