The following information is designed to assist with the interconnection of generators to ATCO Electric's distribution system. The ATCO Electric Distribution system consists of facilities operating at 25 kV and lower voltage.
The Alberta government began restructuring the province's electric industry in 1996 to develop a competitive marketplace for electricity. One of the first steps was to de-regulate power production (generation) and allow open access to the distribution and transmission systems in Alberta for power producers. As a result of the open access, power producers are now able to sell electrical energy directly to the Power Pool of Alberta and receive financial compensation based on the open market price.
The basic steps required for interconnection are:
-
Determine whether your generator is located within ATCO
Electric's Service Area.
-
Review the technical requirements as detailed in the Generator Interconnection Manual, ATCO Electric's
Customer Guide to New Extensions,
Meter Data Manager
Requirements for Distributed Generators
and specific generator
Terms and Conditions.
-
Complete and submit the
Generator Application Form and
return it to the ATCO Electric's Key Accounts
Group. Or, complete the excel form and e-mail it to the
Key
Accounts Group.
-
Submit the applicable non-refundable application fee. The amount of the fee is dependent on the type and size of the proposed generator being connected to the distribution system.
If we do not receive your application fee we will send you an invoice.
-
Submit the design for the producing facility and the proposed interconnection for approval by ATCO Electric. The design must ensure that ATCO Electric's technical requirements are met which are outlined in the
Generator Interconnection Guide
and are further specified in the project review.
Note: There may be additional studies and/or system upgrades required by ATCO Electric which will be the responsibility of the generator at additional cost.
-
Carefully review the commercial terms offered in ATCO Electric's proposal. If the proposal terms are acceptable and agreed upon by the generating customer, ATCO Electric will commence preparing an
Operating Agreement and
Electric Service Agreement.
-
Upon successful completion of the operating agreement, payment of the capital contribution and execution of the Electric Service Agreement, ATCO will construct the outlined distribution facilities and interconnect the generator.
ATCO Electric will not connect the facility, or permit the facility to be connected to the distribution system, until the Alberta Utilities
Commission (AUC) has issued an order for the
interconnection and the order number is provided to ATCO Electric. This order requires that an operating agreement be executed between ATCO Electric and the Producer.
